Technocracy and Crisis — Volcanoes

leave a comment »

It seems to me that the only compelling arguments a contemporary technocrat can put forward that a small-D democrat cannot are ones of stability, sustainability and readiness.

Neatorama covers disasters of the volcano variety today.  Are we ready for a booming Yellowstone?  Should we be?

We are not ready surely for global warming, and the motions so far offer little confidence that conventional governance can respond.  Is public relations the venue where we should fight out policy?  Science policy?  The whole stem cell wave of advancements is hopefully making naysayers blush a bit.  They’re about to cure seriously ill patients in several vectors of disease.

Lobbying and the discussion around is inherently unsettling because we know it isn’t how ideas should get fleshed out.  Expertise isn’t given a big enough seat at the table.
